Former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh, father of World Cup hero Yuvraj Singh, has once again shaken the cricketing world with a sensational prediction about Arjun Tendulkar, son of legend Sachin Tendulkar.
In a recent interview with CricketNext, Yograj claimed that if Yuvraj mentors Arjun for just three months, the young all-rounder could transform into a batting powerhouse akin to West Indian icon Chris Gayle, known for his explosiveness.
Arjun Tendulkar, a left-arm pacer and lower-order batter for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025), is yet to secure a spot in the playing XI this year, despite being signed at his base price of INR 30 lakh. Yograj, who briefly coached Arjun in 2022 before his Ranji Trophy debut for Goa, where he smashed a hundred, believes the 25-year-old’s potential lies in his batting rather than his bowling.
"With regards to Arjun, I said, focus less on his bowling and more on his batting. But if Yuvraj – he and Sachin are so close – takes Sachin's son under his wings for three months, I bet he will become the next Chris Gayle. Often it happens that a fast bowler, if he undergoes a stress fracture, cannot bowl as effectively. I think that Arjun should be handed over to Yuvraj for a while," Yograj said as quoted to CricketNext.
Is There Any Truth in Yograj Singh’s Statement?
Yograj’s confidence comes from Yuvraj’s mentorship success with young talents like Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma. He cautioned that injuries, such as stress fractures, could hinder Arjun’s bowling.
While Arjun’s batting showed promise with a Ranji century, his recent domestic form has been inconsistent with 40 runs and four wickets in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25.
However, as a bowler, he has been showing improvement lately. In the Ranji Trophy 2024-25, he bagged a fifer against Andhra Pradesh. In the same season, he picked up four wickets versus Sikkim.
