Sanju Samson’s long stint with Rajasthan Royals (RR) could be coming to an end. The wicketkeeper-batter, who has led the team for the past few years, has reportedly asked the franchise to let him go before the next Indian Premier League (IPL) auction. Multiple cricket outlets have stated that the 30-year-old has formally requested either a trade to another team or a release.
Samson has been the face of the Royals since returning to the side in 2018. He holds the record for most matches and most runs for the franchise and under his leadership, they reached the IPL final in 2022.
The relationship between Sanju Samson and RR turned sour during IPL 2025. Samson reportedly did not look pleased with how the franchise operated in the season and this led to a rift, eventually resulting in him asking the franchise to either release or trade him.

RR Seek Two CSK Players in Potential Sanju Samson Trade - Report
As per The Indian Express, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are open to signing Samson, but negotiations have hit a snag. The report say that the Royals are not interested in a cash-only deal and instead want two CSK players in exchange. The names of those players have not been disclosed.
"It is understood that Chennai are open to the idea of bringing the 30-year-old to Chepauk through a trade deal via cash. But it has hit a roadblock, with Rajasthan preferring an exchange of two players from Chennai," The Indian Express report read.
It is understood that after IPL 2025, Samson held talks with Chennai Super Kings officials, including head coach Stephen Fleming, during a trip to the United States. CSK, the five-time champions, are believed to be very keen on bringing him to Chepauk.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are also said to be in the mix. The Kerala batter was once part of KKR’s squad in 2012 but he never featured in a match. If no trade is agreed, Samson could enter the IPL 2026 auction, where he would attract heavy bidding.
CSK Plan for the Post-MS Dhoni Era
With MS Dhoni likely to retire soon, CSK are looking for his replacement.
Since making his IPL debut in 2013, Samson has played 177 games, scoring 4,704 runs with three centuries and 26 fifties. He is an obvious candidate to take on a bigger role at CSK if the deal goes through.
