If things had gone according to plan, India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal had planned, then in the upcoming Ranji Season, he would have played for Goa instead of turning out for Mumbai. The 23-year-old had also obtained a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) for the same. However, in a stunning move, the southpaw made a U-turn from his decision to leave Mumbai and decided to continue with the team that made him a star.

Apparently, Rohit Sharma influenced the young opener to remain with Mumbai. As per The Times of India, the former Test skipper convinced Jaiswal to reverse the decision. The southpaw wanted to leave Mumbai due to a tempting captaincy offer from Goa. However, after speaking with Rohit and a few other Mumbai cricketers, the 23-year-old made the decision not to play for Goa.

MCA President Ajinkya Naik told TOI that Yashasvi Jaiswal's request to withdraw NOC for his move to Goa was approved by the body afterwards.

“Rohit asked Yashasvi to stay on in Mumbai at this stage of his career. He explained to him that there was a lot of pride and prestige in playing for a team like Mumbai, which has won the Ranji Trophy a record 42 times. Rohit also told Yashasvi that he must never forget that it was because of Mumbai cricket that he got a platform to show his talent and go on to play for India, and he must be grateful to the city for that. It was here in Mumbai that he started playing cricket in the maidans and then was picked for all age group teams of Mumbai,” MCA president Ajinkya Naik said.

It was playing for Mumbai since his U-19 days that Jaiswal made a name for himself. Making his debut for the prestigious club in 2019, the southpaw had a stunning season, scoring 863 runs in 10 games at an average of 53.93, which included four centuries. Overall, he has amassed 3,712 runs at an average of over 60. In the recently concluded Test series against England, the 23-year-old scored two centuries - the second one a match-winning second innings ton at The Oval to enable a six-run win for India.

In the upcoming domestic season, the southpaw would be eager to show the same hunger and desire and help Mumbai defend the Ranji Trophy. Notably, Jaiswal is also selected for the West Zone squad in the upcoming Duleep Trophy.
