Phil Salt steer RCB to defeat RR in Jaipur

Phil Salt and Virat Kohli led RCB to victory, securing their fourth consecutive away match by defeating Rajasthan Royals by 9 wickets in Jaipur.

Phil Salt and Virat Kohli opened the batting for RCB as Sanju Samson handed the ball to Jofra Archer to start the attack. Salt began the innings with a four, and although Archer bowled tightly, Salt ended the over with a six, bringing the score to 10 runs after the first over.

In the second over, Tushar Despande bowled, and Virat Kohli got off the mark with a boundary. RCB started strongly as Salt quickly shifted gears, finding boundaries and sixes all around the ground. Meanwhile, Kohli anchored the innings, watching as Salt cleared the boundaries with ease. Sanju Samson attempted to change the momentum by introducing Theekshana and Sandeep Sharma, but this only led to more runs for RCB, who finished the powerplay with a score of 65/0, with Phil Salt on 46 (23)* and Virat Kohli on 18 (13)*.

Sanju Samson brought Kumar Karthikeya into the attack, and he managed to bowl the first boundary-less over of the innings. Wanindu Hasaranga was introduced next, and Salt scored his fifty with a six before being dismissed by Karthikeya in the following over for 65 runs off 33 balls, which included 5 fours and 6 sixes. At the end of 9 overs, RCB was at 94/1, with Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal in the middle.

With Phil Salt having done half of the work, Kohli and Padikkal gradually progressed toward victory. Kohli, initially playing a supporting role, shifted gears and found several boundaries and sixes. Despite the heat, both batters were holding up well, taking the match away from Rajasthan Royals.

Virat Kohli reached his third fifty of the season and a milestone 100th t20 fifty with a massive six off Wanindu Hasaranga, bringing RCB closer to the target.

The duo appeared strong, and it seemed unlikely that RR's bowlers could find a breakthrough. After a break taken during the 15th over, RCB was at 146/1, needing just 28 runs from the remaining 4 overs.

After the break, it was Devdutt Padikkal who took on the bowlers with his own set of boundaries, helping RCB chase down the total with 15 balls to spare.

This marked RCB's fourth win of the season, all achieved in away games. Virat Kohli finished with 59 runs off 43 balls, and Devdutt Padikkal contributed 36 runs off 27 balls, forming a match-winning partnership of 83 runs off 54 balls for an easy win in Jaipur.

Credit goes to RCB's bowlers, who maintained tight lines to restrict RR to a competitive total of 173 runs. Phil Salt's explosive innings during the powerplay took the game away from the Royals, while Kohli and Padikkal played their natural game to secure more points, moving RCB to third place in the IPL 2025 points table.
