Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have started their 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with a bang by winning two games on the bounce. RCB beat KKR and CSK and are currently sitting on top of the points table. However, former India captain Virender Sehwag seems to not like RCB holding the first position on the points table and has mocked the Virat Kohli-powered franchise. In a video that has set social media ablaze, the cricketer-turned-expert could be seen openly roasting RCB, calling them 'gareeb (poor)'.
Sehwag's comments came after RCB managed to finally break the Chepauk jinx, and beat CSK for the first time at the venue since 2008. That win also catapulted RCB to the first position on the points table. However, the former India opening batter sensed an opportunity to make fun of RCB and said, RCB should also enjoy being at the pinnacle on the points table as they have never won an IPL title.
"Gareebon ko bhi toh rehne de, photo le le thodi der. Pata nahi kitnin der gareeb log upar rahenge. (Let the poor be on top of the IPL points, let them click photos. Who knows for how long they will be at the top)," Sehwag said in a chat on Cricbuzz.
What did Virender Sehwag exactly mean when he termed RCB 'Gareeb'
Sehwag, who himself has not tasted IPL success as a player while playing for DC, and PBKS said that the 'gareeb' remark was a shot at those IPL franchises who have never won IPL titles, as money wise every IPL team is wealthy.
"What do you think, I was talking about money. No. They are all wealthy in terms of money. Franchises earn 400-500 crore every season. I'm not talking about that. The ones who haven't won a single trophy, I'm calling them gareeb," he added.
Since the inception of IPL in the 2008 season, only RCB, DC, and PBKS are the three teams to have never won an IPL trophy. Apart from these three, LSG also has not tasted IPL glory. But the franchise only became part of IPL in 2022.
